I've been sewing since I stole a cross-stitch kit from my mother at the age of 4. Thirty years and countless stitches later, thread remains an obsession. Although I rarely cross stitch any more, I have been enraptured by the art of temari, a Japanese thread art. I tend not to follow strict traditional guidelines and have definitely added a Western slant to this Asian art. Taking unspun cotton, yarn, and threads, I create geometric patterns on a spherical base using pins and paper to measure out symmetric proportions.
In latter years, I have also begun to sculpt using clay. This is freeing for me, although I still tend to strict geometry. It is a lot more difficult to get clay to behave like I want it to. Give me another 30 years; I may become an expert!
